The empathy advantage: conscious leaders drive measurable business success

My experience and the research on empathy underlines that empathy is a business superpower with real, measurable impact. The power of empathy is consistently underestimated, and there are a few pervasive myths about empathy which also stop people engaging with empathy. I’ll share more on that in this week’s newsletter.

The empathy crisis in leadership

Businessolver’s State of Workplace Empathy study showed there was a ‘critical gap between desired and workplace empathy.’ The lack of empathy in people’s interactions at work is fuelling an increase in workplace toxicity, and a decrease in workplace mental health.

This gap is a huge concern. At the same time, this gap creates an incredible opportunity for conscious leaders to stand out and make a difference through conscious and demonstrated empathy.

What empathetic leadership actually looks like

My customers and clients recognise that empathy is an integral element of conscious leadership, yet there is often quite a bit of confusion around what empathetic leadership actually is. Empathy shows up across different skills, such as:

  • Actively listening to people at a deep level, not just waiting for your turn to speak

  • Creating a work culture where people feel safe enough to bring their whole selves to work

  • Taking the time to understand different perspectives before making decisions

  • Picking up on what team members need, even when they don't explicitly say it

  • Meeting challenges with compassion and clarity because you can absolutely have both

  • Knowing that high empathy along with high accountability drive people and results

Why does empathy matter? The business case for empathy

Empathy delivers some serious business results:

The personal benefits of practicing empathy

To most people, the business case for empathy is compelling. The even better news is that leaders who create and promote empathy benefit from significant personal advantages as well as better organisational outcomes. Check out just some of these benefits below:

  1. Empathy enhances well-being and helps us feel more connected to other people (Chung et al, 2021)

  2. Empathy is an exceptionally effective way to activate the part of our brain associated with producing and maintaining positive emotions, as well as promoting better coping ability (Förster & Kanske, 2022)

  3. Leaders who practise empathy build stronger personal relationships and experience less isolation often associated with leadership positions (Jin & Ikeda, 2023).

  4. Research has shown that higher individual empathy skill levels lower burnout rates (Wagaman et al., 2015).

Empathy is a learnable skill

As with so many elements of conscious leadership, people often believe empathy represents a fixed trait, so you either have it or you don't. Happily, this is not the case. Research thoroughly debunks this myth. We know that empathy is a learnable skill that improves with deliberate practice. Thanks to neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to change and adapt throughout life), we can strengthen empathetic responses through consistent effort and attention. Even leaders who describe themselves naturally analytical can develop solid empathy skills through structured development programs. The key to developing empathy is to regard it as a muscle to be strengthened with regular exercise rather than a fixed personality trait.

Common misconceptions about empathy at work

There are quite a few persistent myths about empathy at work. To me, it’s important to address and correct these misconceptions, otherwise they can become barriers to empathy.

Misconception: Empathy makes you soft or indecisive.

Reality: The most empathetic leaders often make clearer and more confident decisions because they have a deeper insight into what's really happening with their teams, stakeholders and customers.

Misconception: Empathetic leaders can't make tough calls.

Reality: Research shows that empathetic leaders navigate difficult decisions more effectively. They simply do it in ways that uphold levels of dignity and trust.

Misconception: Feelings don’t belong at work.

Reality: Whether you acknowledge emotions or not, they drive workplace behaviour, communication and decision-making. Empathetic leaders have the advantage of understanding the emotional currents that others miss AND by addressing emotions directly, those emotions typically subside and have less of a detrimental influence on the workplace.

Misconception: There's no time for empathy at work.

Reality: It’s helpful to realise that while learning the skills of empathy might initially require some concentration and practice, being empathic typically doesn’t take more time than not being empathic. However, in complex and high-pressure working environments, empathy is a valuable tool for quickly understanding and adapting to changing needs.

Misconception: Empathy means making excuses for poor performance or bad behaviour.

Reality: It does not. When high empathy is paired with high accountability, performance ad productivity improves.

How you can gain the empathy advantage as a conscious leader

  1. When you’re listening to someone, try to focus solely on understanding, and avoid problem-solving

  2. Create simple feedback loops that test and measure the impact of new empathetic behaviors you try out

  3. Learn to better regulate your own levels of stress so you are more able to focus on other people

  4. Be fully present in your interactions: show you are listening and invested with your verbal and non-verbal responses

  5. Be open to considering a challenge from multiple perspectives to increase your empathy
